Chinese Gold Panda

First minted in 1982 by the People's Republic of China, the Chinese Gold Panda Coin was the third gold bullion coin to debut, following the Krugerrand and Maple Leaf. The obverse of the Gold Panda always displays the Temple of Heaven, while the reverse showcases annually changing designs of the iconic Chinese panda bear. Scroll down to explore our extensive Gold Panda inventory and learn more about this renowned Chinese coin series.

As most major global mints annually release a defining gold bullion series emblematic of their country, South Africa offers the gold Krugerrand, Canada presents the gold Maple Leaf , and China issues the gold Panda coins.

History of the Chinese Gold Panda Coins

The Chinese Gold Panda Coin was first introduced in 1982, available in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz weights, all containing .999 pure gold. Due to its initial popularity, the Chinese Mint quickly expanded the series to include a 1/20 oz coin.

The Gold Panda series has been known throughout its history for its annually changing reverse designs, featuring different images of the Giant Panda. This practice was only interrupted once, in 2002, when the same design from 2001 was reused. However, protests from investors led to the introduction of a new design in 2003.

Uniquely among bullion coins, most Gold Pandas lack mint marks, despite being produced by various Chinese mints. In 2016, the denomination of Gold Panda coins shifted from ounces to grams, aligning with China's standard measurement system.

Special Issues of Gold Panda Coins

The Gold Panda coin series is renowned for its consistent annual releases, but special commemorative issues have also been produced on occasion. These special Gold Panda coins may feature variations in size, weight, or design, often struck to commemorate a specific event. They are typically issued in limited quantities, making them particularly appealing to collectors.

For instance, the "Show Panda" is a special edition that showcases a unique design distinct from the standard annual release. These high-relief coins are struck in limited mintages, further enhancing their collectibility.

It's important to note that the scarcity and specialized nature of such special issues can have a positive impact on the coins' value, driving increased interest from investors as well as collectors.
