Australian Gold Lunar Series

The Perth Mint created the Lunar Series as a homage to the Chinese Lunar Calendar. The foundations of the Chinese Lunar calendar, which is used to determine the date of the Lunar New Year, are the cycle of the moon and the course that the Earth travels around the sun (the sun's longitude). The lunar calendar is used to determine the date of the Lunar New Year. The Chinese Lunar calendar has twelve different animals that make up the zodiac pattern. Australian Gold Lunar Coins were made by the Perth Mint for the first time in 1996.

The Lunar Series

These coins are available in a variety of sizes, including 1⁄20 oz, 1⁄10 oz, 1⁄4 oz, 1⁄2 oz, and 1 ounce. All the coins are made from .9999 pure gold and are legal tender. The Perth Mint in Australia has established itself as a pioneer in the field of Chinese zodiac coins by producing lunar series I, II, and III coins. The famous image of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is featured on the obverse, while the reverse side of the coin displays one-of-a-kind artwork of animals from the Zodiac. Each coin in the series depicts a different animal that is associated with the Chinese zodiac. It shows twelve different animals, one for each year of the Chinese lunar cycle.

Ox: Shows a big bull standing tall to show how strong and tough it is.

Tiger: Tiger, the powerful big cat is shown roaming, with its muscles and stripes shown in stunning detail.

Rabbit: Rabbit coin is all about elegance.

The Dragon: A strong dragon that looks like a snake fly through swirling clouds and flames.

Snake: Coiled snake that looks ready to strike, with its head arched scarily.

Horse: It shows the power and beauty of this noble animal.

Goat: Portrays a mother and kid in a tender scene.

Monkey: Its curious face and active posture give it a whimsical feel.

Rooster: its ornate plumage and wattle are finely delineated.

Dog: Features a dog sitting still, aware and following, as man's loyal friend.

Pig: Representing luck and prosperity.

Rat: Shows the quick and smart rat sitting on top of old Chinese ingots.

Each year, a new set of coins comes out with art that shows the spirit of a different animal from the zodiac through intricate designs that have cultural value. Starting in 2020, the third Lunar Series will end in 2031, the Year of the Pig.
